Erekson copy of Richmond’s Drawing Board

I took a caricature workshop from Tom Richmond in 2023, I really loved his drawing board. I took a few photos to attempt to recreate it. It was fun to research. I finally figured out what material to use when I watched this Fasen documentary.

Knowing Tom was drawing on 12x16 paper and the dimensions of a pencil and folding table, I reversed engineered (aka guessed and assumed) the dimensions and built a 3d model.

Here's my final build. I made the holder big enough for 12x16 paper, but since I'm trying to use up 2 reams of 11X14, I cut a scrap .5" thick piece 1' tall and as wide as the opening to drop down there.

If you want to try, here's what I used, and the order of operations.

 Materials

Tools

Tape measure. drill bits, rotary disc sander, table saw, T-square, flat head screwdriver, utility knife, clamps

Measurements

Assembly

Unroll the vinyl at least 24 hrs. before assembly to get it to relax and lay flat

Use a table saw to cut PVC

Drill out the rivets holding the clip to the clip board

Using the disc sander, round the corners of the drawing board and pencil shelf, then make the angles top bevel of the side walls of the paper holder

with chalk or light pencil and the T-square, mark the placement of the shelf, the back paper holder, and the clip

Using the old clipboard as a guide drill the holes to attach the clip, using a bit the same thickness as the aluminum binding posts.

Attach the shelf with PVC primer and cement, use blue masking tape to mask the none glue surfaces as the glue dissolves any PVC it touches

A fix the vinyl cover with the double-sided tape, Instructions came with the vinyl.

Trim it flush with a utility or X-acto knife

attach the clip with the aluminum binding posts and screw, added washers to the back to

glue the side walls and bottom wall to the ¼ PVC to assemble the paper holder

glue the assembled paper holder piece to the back

go draw something
